Pedestrian safety in East Street is set to improve, with Council confirming enhancements of the mid-block pedestrian crossing to create a safer and more visible crossing for all users.
Following a recent review and support from the Traffic Committee, Council will move forward with targeted upgrades that include kerb extensions on both sides of the existing crossing on East Street between Bolton and Twynam Streets. This will reduce the crossing width to 7.0 metres, helping to shorten the distance pedestrians need to walk and improving visibility for both pedestrians and drivers.
The design mirrors the successful kerb extension at the nearby Whitton Street and East Street intersection and will be supported by updated signage in accordance with the latest Australian Standards (AS 1742.10 – 2024).
Mayor Kschenka said the decision reflects Council’s strong commitment to community safety.
“These upgrades are a step to improve safety for pedestrians, especially in such a busy area,” he said.
“By reducing crossing distance and improving visibility, we’re making East Street safer and more user-friendly.”
Importantly, no changes to existing parking or stopping areas will be made, ensuring minimal disruption while delivering a significant safety benefit.
The upgrade is part of Council’s broader focus on improving pedestrian infrastructure and will proceed following final endorsement by the Traffic Committee.
