Narrandera Shire Council is reminding all road users to drive with caution, particularly on rural and regional roads, as livestock movements and changing road conditions continue to pose safety risks.
With recent reports of stock on roads and increased farming activity in the region, Council is urging motorists to remain vigilant, drive to the conditions, and pay close attention to roadside signage.
“Animals can stray onto the road unexpectedly, especially near open grazing land,” said Mayor Neville Kschenka.
“We’re asking drivers to slow down, remain alert, and never ignore signs indicating the presence of livestock or changes to driving conditions.”
Council and local landowners are working together to secure fencing and reduce the risk of animals escaping, but drivers play a critical role in preventing accidents.
Key reminders for motorists:
• Drive to the conditions, especially in rural areas or in poor weather.
• Watch for signs indicating stock crossings, recent animal activity, or reduced speed zones.
• Be prepared to stop or slow down if animals are on or near the road.
• Report stray stock on roads to Council on 6959 5510.
Council also encourages landholders to ensure fencing is well-maintained and to notify authorities if animals go missing or escape.
“We all share the responsibility for keeping our roads safe,” Mayor Neville Kschenka said.
“A few extra seconds of caution could save a life.”
