Koala relaxing in the Narrandera Flora and Fauna reserve

Nestled along the Murrumbidgee River, the Narrandera Flora and Fauna Reserve is a peaceful retreat where you can connect with nature.

It’s home to a flourishing community of wildlife, including the iconic koala, thanks to a visionary local effort that began in 1972. Starting with just a handful of koalas, the reserve now supports around 300 healthy residents, all thriving on a diet of river red gum leaves.

Take your time exploring the 1.5-hour self-guided walking track, where you’ll wind through an incredible river red gum forested area and floodplain. you might spot eastern grey kangaroos grazing in the shade, swamp wallabies darting through the underbrush, or if you’re lucky, a Rakali or platypus gliding through the water. Birdwatchers are in for a treat too. More than 65 bird species call the reserve home, from tiny Weebills flitting between branches to the occasional wedge-tailed eagle soaring high above.

Beyond the wildlife, the track offers views of Lake Talbot and the river, along with plenty of opportunities to learn about the local ecology and conservation efforts. Don’t be surprised if you fall in love with the reserve, just like the Narrandera community. They even host an annual koala count to keep track of these beloved creatures.

Whether you’re here for the animals, the scenery, or a bit of both, the Narrandera Flora and Fauna Reserve is a must-visit spot to slow down, explore, and reconnect with nature.
