Lobbying Councillors

Lobbying is common in local government and the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) has a view that appropriate lobbying of councillors is normal and part of the democratic process. The most common form of lobbying occurs when an individual or group makes direct contact with a councillor in an attempt to influence a council decision.

It is in the public interest that lobbying is fair and does not undermine public confidence due to impartial decision making. Councillors, constituents and other parties should be mindful that some lobbying may be inappropriate or potentially unlawful. Such examples include canvassing councillors when applying for a job at council or lobbying councillors in relation to tenders.
