Urban and rural addressing

Narrandera Shire Council is responsible for issuing all urban and rural addresses in the Shire. This is an important service as it allows your property to be easily identified by a whole range of service providers within the community including, emergency services (eg: fire, ambulance, police), postal services (eg: regular mail delivery and special packages) and other service and utility providers.

Urban and rural addresses are different to the legal description of a parcel of land, eg: Lot 1 DP1234 is not an address.

Council generally issues an address at subdivision stage as part of the development process for new properties.

What is classified as urban address?

Council issues an urban address for most properties that located within the Narrandera, Barellan, Grong Grong, Kamarah and Binya urban areas. Most properties within these urban areas already have assigned addresses.

How does urban addressing work?

Urban addressing must be assigned by Council in accordance with the Australian / New Zealand Rural and Urban Addressing Standard (AS4819).

This can be a complicated process, with many factors taken into consideration. Do not allocate your own number as it can cause complications for emergency and postal services. It can also create confusion and delays when it comes to selling property.

How can I get an urban address?

Contact Council to clarify your urban address or request one to be issued for your property. Contact council@narrandera.nsw.gov.au or submit online.

Are there any requirements for displaying my urban address?

Urban addresses should be displayed in the following manner to ensure that your property is easily identifiable to emergency, postal and other service providers in the community:

  • In a clearly legible and suitably sized manner on the mailbox
  • Clear of any shrubs, bushes or plants that may hide the address number
  • Also, if desired, in a clearly legible and suitably sized manner on the front facade of the building

Under Section 124(8) of the Local Government Act 1993, a Council may order an owner or occupier of the land, "To Identify premises with such numbers or other identification in such manner as specified in the order” and failure to comply is an offence under Section 628.

What is classified as a rural address?

Rural addresses are issued for properties that are located outside of the townships and villages. Rural addresses are normally issued for properties in rural or agricultural areas, however some properties on the outskirts of urban areas are also allocated with rural addresses.

How does rural addressing work?

Like urban addressing, rural addressing must be assigned by Council in accordance with the Australian / New Zealand Rural and Urban Addressing Standard (AS4819).

This can be a complicated process, with many factors taken into consideration. Do not allocate your own number as it can cause complications for emergency and postal services. It can also create confusion and delays when it comes to selling property.

Rural addressing numbers are based on distance from a starting point.

How can I get a rural address?

Narrandera Shire Council has already allocated rural addresses to many areas of the Narrandera LGA. Contact Council to check your rural address number or request one be issued for your property.

If a new number needs to be allocated, an order will also be placed for a standard rural addressing plate with reflective numbers to erect at your property gateway. Plates orders can be supply for self-installation or supply/installation by Council (refer to Fees & Charges).

Contact Council to clarify your urban address or request one to be issued for your property. Contact council@narrandera.nsw.gov.au or submit online.

Are there any requirements for displaying my rural address?

Rural addresses should be displayed in the following manner to ensure that your property is easily identifiable to emergency, postal and other service providers in the community by:

  • Fixing the yellow address plate to the left of the main access point in a location clear of shrubs, bushes or plants
  • Optionally, displaying the number on a mailbox at the entrance of your property
  • Avoiding displaying identification details on gates that may not be visible when open

Under Section 124(8) of the Local Government Act 1993, a Council may order an owner or occupier of the land, "To Identify premises with such numbers or other identification in such manner as specified in the order” and failure to comply is an offence under Section 628.

What happens if my property has more than one dwelling or worksite?

If there is a chance that you may need emergency services to find a separate location, eg: workers' residence, shearing shed, workshop, stockyards, etc then you can request an additional location number.

Contact Council to clarify your urban address or request one to be issued for your property. Contact council@narrandera.nsw.gov.au or submit online.

What should I use as my mailing address?

Unless you have a post office box in a town or village, you should use your allocated rural address, eg:

Resident name   A & B Farmer
Property name (if any)  Pine View
Rural address number  123 Rural Road
Locality State Postcode  GRONG GRONG   NSW   2652
