Pigeons

Feral pigeons dominate country towns due to the availability of food, fresh water and secure breeding sites. Pigeons primarily eat seeds and grains but will eat human food scraps and leftovers if available.

Narrandera has a pigeon population that can be troublesome to property owners. This can result in increased vermin numbers, damage to structures due to the corrosiveness of their droppings, increased biosecurity risks.

If your property has a pigeon problem, you need to take action to prevent pigeons from roosting and nesting on buildings. If Council receives a justified complaint, an order to take action may be served.

Control methods

Non-lethal control techniques are recommended as the most effective solution to reduce numbers.

  • Residents are discouraged from intentionally feeding pigeons
  • Food reduction by removing sources of food and water
  • Looking for and destroying nests
  • Preventing birds from accessing roosting and nesting sites by blocking entry points, open eaves, etc
  • Adding netting, gutter guards, spikes, etc to prevent landing and roosting on buildings
  • Seeking advice from licensed pest control operators

Racing pigeons

Racing/homing pigeons are covered by club and federation rules. These birds are identified by leg rings and must not be harmed.
