How does backflow occur?

There is a risk water could flow backwards into the watermain if there is a drop in the supply pressure and the water could contain contaminates, foreign matter, or debris. This usually occurs if there is cross-connection between potable and non-potable water sources. Backflow prevention devices are designed to stop this from happening.
