Water Supply System
Narrandera Shire Council is providing water supply services to a population of approximately 5,000 in Narrandera. Council is responsible for the installation, maintenance and operation of the water supply network, reservoirs, pump stations, mains and associated hydrants and valves.
Water for Narrandera town is obtained from 3 bores located in the south of the town near the Murrumbidgee River. Of these 3 bores, only 2 (Bore nos.1 and 3) are currently operational. The quality of water from replacement bore (Bore 2A) drilled for the collapsed Bore no.2 was unsuitable and hence abandoned. Another new bore near Bore 3 has been established but produces water with too high Iron content.
Water obtained in all the bores is also high in Iron and Manganese content and slightly corrosive. The water is currently aerated to remove the iron and is chlorinated before storage in the seven reserviours around the town. Options are being investigated to further improve water quality.
Water is supplied in three zones, which are isolated to prevent recirculation of the supply. The reticulation system is of varying ages, with some sections (only 5% remaining) dating back to 1895. Pipes have been gradually replaced since 1945.
All other communities including Binya, Barellan, Moombooldool, Karmarah, Grong Grong and Corobimilla are supplied by the Goldenfields County Council (formerly Southern Riverina County Council).
