Sewerage Treatment System
Narrandera Shire Council provides sewerage services to a population of approximately 4,500 in the town of Narrandera.
The old Narrandea Trickling filter treatment works was replaced with a Pasveer Intermittent Aeration system in 1976 (comprising of 3 Pasveer channels of 2000EP capacity each) with a dry well pump station directing all flows from Narrandera to the works. Three other Sewerage Pump Stations (SPS) convey sewage from low areas of the town. Major Maintenance has been carried out on the aeration equipment, effluent ponds and sludge lagoons.
In 2006, a catch/balance pond and an ultraviolent disinfection unit will be added to the STP. Also, the pumps in Pump Station No.1 will be upgraded to 140 L/sec capacity and an emergency storage tank 90,000 L capacity added to the pump station.
Treated sewage effluant is disposed into Bundidgerry Creek through the effluant retention pond.
The reticulation system is of varying ages, with some sections of vitrified clay pipe work dating back to 1898. Pipes are gradually being replaced with a new sewer rising main constructed in 1976. However there are frequent problems of damage to the pipelines due to roots of large trees in the town. H2S gases generated in the sewers are causing corrosion damage to the system.
Currently, municipal sewerage services have not been provided outside Narrandera urban area. All other communities in the Shire including Binya, Barellan, Moombooldool, Kamarah, Grong Grong and Corobimilla rely on septic tank systems for sewage management.
