Sights and activities in Narrandera

Narrandera is an elegant town, its environment and history offering a unique country town experience.

Known for its tree lined streets and parks and gardens, Narrandera is often referred to by travellers as an oasis. Narrandera is blessed with abundant water and hugs the banks of Lake Talbot and the Murrumbidgee River.

PARKSIDE COTTAGE MUSEUM The Museum houses some very significant items, each telling a story of Australia. Of note is the MacArthur Cloak which is made from early Merino wool taken from the first bale of wool sent back to England by Governor MacArthur. Early Riverboat trade on the Murrumbidgee is represented by the navigation maps of Captain T Bynon. TIGER MOTH MEMORIAL The Tiger Moth is the focal point of a memorial to those who trained at Narrandera's No 8 EFTS (Elementary Flight Training School) during the Second World War. The memorial is housed in a building adjacent to the Visitor Information Centre in the Narrandera Park. The display features the DH 82 Tiger Moth, a comprehensive collection of model airplanes and a range of photographic memorabilia relating to the training school at Narrandera. Opening Hours: 9 to 5pm Monday to Saturday, 10am to 2pm on Sundays:  Donation appreciated.

NARRANDERA PARK Wide green lawns, shady trees, a children' playground and free BBQ's make the Narrandera Park a favoured picnic spot. Also within the park, is an Animal Enclosure, a Camellia and Rose Garden, the Visitor Information Centre and the Tiger Moth Memorial.  Toilets are located behind the Visitor Information Centre.

NARRANDERA FISHERIES CENTRE The Fisheries Centre is a research and breeding facility that has as its focus the freshwater species of the Murray Darling River System. You can learn about the facility's work, and species such as Murray Cod, Silver Perch, Golden Perch and Trout cod on a tour of the centre. Tour times: 9am, 10.30am, 11.30am, 1.30pm and 2.30pm Monday to Friday (Public Holidays excepted). Group bookings are welcome: 02 69599021

LAVENDER AROMATIQUES This award winning lavender farm produces a range of body care products from oil distilled on the farm. The farm gift and coffee shop is open 9.30am to 4pm 7 days. Ph 02 6959 3920

HERITAGE ITEMS Narrandera has a rich heritage, dating from squatter and river boat times. The town has been classified an Urban Conservation Area by the National Trust. Follow the Two Foot Heritage Walk and enjoy the atmosphere created by wide avenues and elegant old buildings. You can read a potted history of Narrandera or you can also take a history lesson via a walk through the Narrandera Cemetery, maps of which are available from the Visitor's Centre. If you prefer to drive, a Blue Arrow Driving Route starts near the Visitor's Centre.

ANTIQUES, COLLECTIBLES, ARTS & CRAFTS A number of novelty and antique shops that open on Weekends as well as weekdays, allow you to spend a full day in Narrandera, just browsing. Go Nursery hopping. Spend hours looking over collectables, folk art and unique craft. You will find most of these open Wednesday through Sunday. HANKINSON MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN The Hankinson Fountain, a ceramic fountain made by Royal Doulton stands in the Narrandera Memorial Gardens. It was donated to the people of Narrandera in 1922 as a memorial to those who died in World War I by Ald R.J Hankinson, the Mayor at the time. There are only two of these fountains known to be in existence, the other one being in Karachi, Pakistan.

SANDHILLS ARTIFACTS Michael Lyons makes a range of didgeridoos, boomerangs in his workshop by the river on Bamblett Street. Contact the Visitor's Centre for an appointment.

LAKE TALBOT SWIMMING COMPLEX Take the plunge on the Rampage Slide for an exhilarating ride of speed or join the excitement of the 100m Water Slide at the Lake Talbot Pools. Three chlorinated pools, terraced lawns and shady trees together with coin operated BBQ's make an ideal water playground. There is also a kiosk on site. Open each day November to Easter except Christmas Day. Its worth noting that the Swimming Pools themselves are set into the Lake, meaning that the natural part of the lake extends East from the pools. The Boat ramp is adjacent to the pools and part of the lake is a focal point for water skiers. Phone 02 6959 1211

LAKE TALBOT LOOKOUT Located at the entrance to the Lake Talbot Caravan Park the Lookout provides a view of Lake Talbot and surrounding bushland. It is also a starting point for the Bundidgerry Walking Track. The lookout has a shelter, picnic tables and coin operated BBQs.

BUNDIDGERRY WALKING TRACK The Bundidgerry Walking Tracks follows a scenic route along Lake Talbot and the majestic Murrumbidgee River. A map of the track is available from the Visitor Information s Centre in the Narrandera Park.

FISHING AREAS Murray Cod, Yellowbelly, Redfin and some Silver Bream are taken in the Murrumbidgee River a short distance from Narrandera. The back area of Lake Talbot, the beaches on the Nature Reserve, the Yanco and Colombo Creeks, and the Yanco and Berembed Weirs are favoured fishing areas for local anglers. Good access to the River can also be had on the MIA Forest Drive, maps of which are available from the Visitor's Centre.  A boat ramp is located in Narrandera township off Old Brewery Road (just East of the Murrumbidgee River bridge on the Newell Highway).  A boat ramp also exists at Lake Talbot, off Broad street, on boat ramp road adjacent to Lake Talbot Tourist Park. A fishing license is required to fish in NSW.

NARRANDERA WETLANDS The wetlands is located just West of the Murrumbidgee River bridge off Shung Street.  The wetlands is fed by stormwater from the town and is designed to be a perennial wetlands. A walking track surrounds the wetlands.

WRECK OF THE PS WAGGA WAGGA  Can be viewed when river level is low.  A viewing platform is located approx 2.5kms along Lizard Drive.  Unsealed road. Continue through gateway opening.  

KOALA REGENERATION RESERVE A reserve along the Murrumbidgee River adjacent to Lake Talbot, has been declared a regeneration area for a disease free colony of koala. Talk to Visitor's Centre staff about pre-booking a koala spotting walk. (Our volunteers will accompany you and ensure that you see koalas).

NARRANDERA FORESTRY CENTRE Elizabeth Street, Narrandera This State Government operated nursery produces at least 1 million native tube stock each year. Visitors are welcome 9am - 4pm Monday to Friday.

SELF DRIVE TOURS from NARRANDERA There are a number of attractions in small towns within a 100km range of Narrandera.  Barellan Museum is a gem, Coolamon and Junee

KIESLING'S LANE HERITAGE WALK   A short pedestrian laneway in the main street just off the raised pedestrian crossing near the pharmacy.  The story of Narrandera's development is told on a series of storyboards and images on the wall.    

HISTORIC CEMETERY SITE The original Narrandera Cemetery site is found within the grounds of the Narrandera Forestry Centre. The small graveyard contains the remains of Narrandera's first "doctor" Dr Trollope and was part of the original Narrandera run owned by the ruthless Edward Flood. JOHN O'BRIEN BUSH FESTIVAL This gem of a festival has a multitude of activities taking place in an array of venues throughout Narrandera. It takes inspiration from Australian bush culture; its music, its poetry and its lifestyle. In particular it is inspired by the verse of John O'Brien and recognises the Irish-Australian heritage so evident in his very insightful, sometimes sad but most often comic poetry. Poets'breakfasts, bush and Irish music sessions and dancing, as well as top class performances of humour, word and song, contribute to an event that is a great country town experience. The John O'Brien Bush Festival is held annually in mid March. EVENTS IN NARRANDERA The John O'Brien Bush Festival (March), the Easter Hot Rod Rally and the National Cavy Show and the Camellia Show (August) are just some of the events on Narrandera's Events Calender.  Narrandera Race Club hosts three race meetings over winter.

TRAVELLERS FRUIT FLY ALERT Please be aware that Narrandera lies within the 'Fruit Fly' Exclusion Zone that takes in a large part of S E Australia. On your approach to Narrandera from the North and the East you will see highway signs asking you to dispose of all fruits (which includes tomatoes.) Please help to protect the region's orchards (and avoid a substantial fine) by disposing of your fruit in the bins provided.  Fact sheets are available from the Visitor Information Centre to help you make your way beyond the Narrandera.  * According to the Tristate Fruit Fly Committee Fact Sheet the following items are NOT prohibited:  Beans, canned fruit, carrot, celery, coffee berry, dried fruit, eggplant, grapes, lettuce, monstera, okra, olives, onion, peas, pineapple, potato, shallot. 

Restricted items can be cooked or frozen.  They will then be acceptable.
